Why do weeping willows weep when pussy willows don’t?
Would a wood of willows wail and whine and weep,
Or would a wood of weeping willows cry themselves to sleep?
Will a willow wash and will it wipe it’s eyes,
Or will a willow wet it’s pillow when a willow cries?
When a weeping willow whispers in the breeze,
Is it sending messages to other lonely trees?
I asked a shady character if he could shed some light
On why a weeping willow tree might weep all through the night.
He said he’d ask a neighbour. a fine upstanding sort,
And so I knocked upon an oak and asked him what he thought.
And then I heard the pining of some pine trees in a wood;
I asked if they could help me and they said perhaps they could.
They knew the weeping willow, he often felt so sad,
But once he’s had a real good cry things didn’t seem so bad.

Once a willow washes and once it dries it’s eyes,
It looks down at the water and it has a nice surprise:
